If you've got kids and you're looking for one of the best family-friendly attractions on the Emerald Coast, the Gulf Breeze Zoo deserves a spot on your list.
We've visited more times than we can count, and somehow every trip feels a little different. It's one of those places that's large enough to keep everyone entertained but small enough that you don't leave feeling completely exhausted.
In fact, that's one of the biggest reasons we keep coming back.
Unlike some of the country's massive zoos that require an entire day and miles of walking, the Gulf Breeze Zoo is incredibly manageable. You can comfortably spend a few hours here, interact with animals, let the kids play, grab lunch, and still have energy left for the rest of your day.

Why We Keep Coming Back
I'll admit it—getting my husband here the first time wasn't easy.
His exact words?
"I'm not going to the raccoon zoo."
If you're from the Panhandle, you probably understand the joke.
Now?
He's completely on board and happily suggests we go.

Start Your Visit at the Budgies
Every single visit begins the same way.
We head straight to the budgie aviary.
Within seconds, colorful birds are landing on your shoulders, climbing onto little hands, and making everyone laugh.
It's one of the most interactive experiences at the zoo and always a favorite with our kids.
The recently renovated budgie exhibit is even better than before. The space feels larger, easier to navigate, and much more comfortable for families.
One feature we especially appreciate is the expanded viewing area outside the enclosure.
If you have younger children—or adults who aren't thrilled about birds landing on them—they can still enjoy watching everything without stepping inside.
Of course, most kids end up wanting to go in anyway.

Fun Photo Opportunities
The zoo isn't just about animals.
Our kids have traditions that happen every single visit.
There's a kangaroo statue they absolutely have to climb on for pictures.
Then there's the animal jump comparison where they see how their jumps compare to kangaroos, frogs, and other animals.
It's simple.
It's silly.
And somehow it's one of their favorite parts of the day.

Easy to Explore With Kids
One of the biggest advantages of the Gulf Breeze Zoo is its layout.
The paths are straightforward.
The exhibits flow naturally.
You're never walking forever between animals.
If you've ever visited enormous zoos like the San Diego Zoo, you know those can be incredible—but they're also full-day adventures with lots of hills and walking.
The Gulf Breeze Zoo offers a completely different experience.
It's much easier to navigate with strollers, younger kids, and grandparents.

Interactive Animal Feedings
This is where the zoo really shines.
Instead of simply walking past exhibits, your family gets to interact with many of the animals.
Feeding the giraffes is always one of our favorite experiences.
Watching those long tongues grab lettuce from little hands never gets old.
Throughout the zoo you'll also have opportunities to feed several other animals, making the visit much more engaging than simply looking at exhibits.
The kids always look forward to deciding which animals they're feeding next.

Buy the Feeding Bundle
If you're planning on participating in several feeding experiences, we definitely recommend purchasing the feeding bundle.
Typically it includes:
- Lettuce for the giraffes
- Seed sticks for the budgies
- Feed for goats, sheep, camels, and other animals
We've done it both ways.
Buying the bundle is usually easier, more convenient, and often less expensive than purchasing everything individually.
It also keeps the day moving without having to stop at every feeding station.

Local Insider Tip
Here's a little local secret.
Once people finish feeding the budgies, many leave partially used seed sticks behind.
If you don't mind reusing one, you'll often find extras sitting near the aviary or in the designated disposal areas.
Not guaranteed...
…but it's happened enough times that it's worth mentioning.

Is the Membership Worth It?
For locals?
Absolutely.
Our membership paid for itself much faster than we expected.

The safari train isn't necessarily the main attraction.
But it is one of our favorite breaks during the day.
Especially in the Florida heat.
The train gives everyone a chance to sit down, cool off, and enjoy the animals from a different perspective before continuing through the zoo.
If you're visiting with younger kids, it's a great way to reset everyone's energy.

Let the Kids Burn Some Energy
There's also a playground near the middle of the zoo.
Sometimes our kids want to stop there immediately.
We usually convince them to finish most of the animals first...
...then reward them with playground time before heading home.
It's another reason the zoo works so well for families.
Kids aren't expected to quietly walk from exhibit to exhibit for hours.
They get opportunities to climb, run, and play too.

The food isn't why you visit the zoo.
But it's convenient and perfectly adequate for a family outing.
