Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island sit right in the middle of the Emerald Coast, but they're sometimes overshadowed by Destin to the east and Navarre to the west.
We think that's a mistake.
This area gives families a great mix of beaches, animal experiences, parks, waterfront activities and easygoing places to spend a few hours without needing a massive itinerary.
And we're still exploring.

The Gulfarium is one of the area's best-known family attractions and an easy addition to a Fort Walton Beach or Okaloosa Island day.
We've visited with our kids and learned a few things we'd absolutely do differently next time.

The Boardwalk puts restaurants, beach access and other amenities together in one convenient stop.
It's especially useful when you're trying to combine beach time with food or give everyone something to do without moving the car five times.

Don't overlook Fort Walton Beach's parks.
Liza Jackson Park is one of the places we've explored, and this is a category we're actively building out because some of the best family outings on the Emerald Coast don't require admission at all.
