31-Hour Panama City Beach Weekend Itinerary: A Kid-Free PCB Getaway

You don't necessarily need a full week—or even a full weekend—to get away to Panama City Beach.

We had exactly 31 kid-free hours, from noon Saturday until 7 p.m. Sunday, including our drive from Navarre.

In that time, we rode the SkyWheel at sunset, played mini golf, tackled an Indiana Jones-style escape room, explored Pier Park after dark, walked the pier, played Topgolf, rode bikes, spent time at the pool and still managed to slow down enough for a one-hour afternoon nap.

7 PM: Head home

Our biggest advantage was staying close to Pier Park. With such a short trip, we wanted to spend our time doing things, not driving back and forth across PCB.

Where We Stayed: Embassy Suites Panama City Beach

We stayed at Embassy Suites by Hilton Panama City Beach Resort, near Pier Park.

For this particular itinerary, the location was primo.

Mini golf and the SkyWheel were nearby, Pier Park was easy to explore, and even our escape room was close enough that we managed to turn getting there into a five-minute challenge.

The resort itself has a great atmosphere with lots of plants, attractive common spaces, a large pool area and plenty of places to relax.

We'd mentioned on our reservation that we were celebrating a kid-free weekend, and the hotel surprised us with a few thoughtful extras, including complimentary appetizers.

Another feature we used more than expected: the bikes. We could check them out, ride, return them and grab them again later.

For a one-night trip, those little resort amenities made a difference.

Stop 1: Mini Golf

Our first real activity was mini golf.

Normally, I smoke Nick.

This time I somehow lost two golf balls, so we're going to move right past that.

One thing we liked about the course was the challenge wheel. Certain holes gave us different ways to play, which made a regular round of mini golf considerably more entertaining.

And once we finished, we were already in the right place for our next stop.

Stop 2: Ride the SkyWheel at Sunset

If you're adding the SkyWheel to your Panama City Beach itinerary, here's our biggest tip:

Time it for sunset.

We got views over Pier Park, the beach and the surrounding area while there was still plenty of daylight. During the ride, the sky began changing and the lights below started coming on.

It was easily one of the prettiest parts of our weekend.

An Unexpected First Dance

After the SkyWheel, we headed back toward the hotel for dinner.

There happened to be a wedding taking place on the deck above us, and while we were waiting, we could hear the music.

Nick asked me to dance.

A woman nearby noticed us and sweetly asked if we'd like her to take some pictures.

That made the moment especially meaningful because Nick and I never had a traditional wedding or reception, which means we never had a traditional first dance.

Years later, ours happened unexpectedly at sunset in Panama City Beach to the music from somebody else's wedding.

Not part of the itinerary.

Definitely one of the best parts of it.

Dinner—and a Five-Minute Sprint

Dinner at the hotel was worth it, but it took a little longer than expected.

Unfortunately, we had an escape room reservation.

So our leisurely dinner involving steak, fish tacos and nachos quickly became:

Eat. Go.

I challenged Nick that we could finish and get to the escape room within five minutes.

We started running.

I almost stepped in throw-up.

And somehow...

we made it.

If nothing else demonstrates how convenient our location was, that probably does.

Stop 3: Ruins: The Forbidden Treasure

Our escape room was Ruins: The Forbidden Treasure, and the best way I can describe the atmosphere is very Indiana Jones-y.

Nick was completely in his element.

He was finding clues, investigating everything and putting things together considerably faster than I expected.

This ended up being one of our favorite activities of the weekend.

We already want to go back and try another room. One of the staff members recommended the Yeti room, so that's currently on our list for next time.

Stop 4: Pier Park After Dark

After the escape room, we grabbed ice cream and walked around Pier Park.

PCB at night comes with its own entertainment: people-watching, cars, lights, music and plenty happening around you.

We didn't have another reservation to make, so we just wandered.

Eventually, we headed toward the pier.

Stop 5: Panama City Beach Pier at Night

The pier was one of the simplest stops on our itinerary—and one of my favorites.

We walked out after dark and spent some time sitting over the Gulf.

That's it.

No scheduled activity.

Just sitting there for a while.

Well...

Sitting there with the occasional cockroach—excuse me, palmetto bug—running across the planks.

Because Florida.

Playbook Tip: Walking onto the pier and fishing from the pier have different admission fees, so check current pricing before your visit.

Then it was back to the hotel to wrap up Saturday.

Sunday Morning: Breakfast

Breakfast was included with our stay, including made-to-order omelets.

Mine was excellent.

Unfortunately, I ate the entire thing before remembering that I run a travel channel and should probably have taken a picture of it.

You'll have to trust me.

The Optional Timeshare Detour

Our Sunday morning itinerary took an unexpected turn when we were approached about attending a timeshare presentation.

We had room in our schedule, the perks being offered made sense for us, and we knew we weren't obligated to purchase anything.

So we went.

We listened.

We did not buy a timeshare.

And then we went back to our regularly scheduled vacation.

If you're considering doing something similar, make sure you understand the time commitment and requirements and decide whether the incentive is worth that time to you.

For us, it worked with the schedule we already had.

Stop 6: Topgolf

Next up was Topgolf.

Apparently, the previous day's mini golf hadn't provided enough competition.

Topgolf works well for a couples trip because you don't need to be particularly good at golf. You can play, eat, hang out and talk an appropriate amount of trash to your spouse.

We had a great time.

Final Stop: Absolutely Nothing

After Topgolf, we went back to the resort and spent our remaining hours by the pool.

Nick managed to fit in a full one-hour nap.

Good for him.

We had packed quite a bit into 31 hours, but we still had enough downtime for the weekend to feel like a getaway rather than a checklist.

By 7 p.m., it was time to head home.

Would We Do This Panama City Beach Itinerary Again?

Absolutely.

In fact, by the end of our kid-free weekend, we were already planning to come back—with the kids.

We're looking at WonderWorks, Ripley's, another escape room and another visit to the pirate show.

Our 31 hours were enough to have a break, explore PCB and come home ready to plan another trip.

Stay somewhere central + choose a few activities close together + make one reservation for something different + leave room to wander and relax.
