Things to Do in Downtown Pensacola: A Local Playbook

Downtown Pensacola packs a surprising amount into a relatively small area. You can explore centuries of history, walk along Pensacola Bay, visit museums, find local restaurants and shops, catch a baseball or hockey game and visit some of Pensacola's most recognizable local institutions.

The best part? You don't need to try to do everything in one day.

Here's how we'd build your Downtown Pensacola Playbook.

Start With Some Pensacola Institutions

Joe Patti's Seafood has been part of Pensacola for generations and is worth visiting even if you've never stepped inside a seafood market on vacation.

The massive seafood counter is the main attraction, but you'll find much more inside. If you're visiting from out of town and want to bring Gulf Coast seafood home, ask about options for packing it for travel.

Another local stop worth knowing is J.W. Renfroe Pecan Company.

We've bought Renfroe pecans through local fundraisers for years, but the store has a much larger selection. Our pick is the milk chocolate pecans. When we asked the employees about their most popular varieties, they recommended the pralines, Taste of the South and cinnamon pecans.

Explore the Pensacola Waterfront

Community Maritime Park is one of our favorite areas to enjoy views of Pensacola Bay.

It's home to Blue Wahoos Stadium, so check the baseball schedule if you're visiting during the season. The park hosts other community events too, including the annual youth duathlon.

Nearby Bruce Beach provides another opportunity to get outside and enjoy the waterfront.

Grab Lunch at The Garden

Traveling with a group that can't agree on lunch?

The Garden at Palafox + Main is Pensacola's only outdoor food hall, with multiple food options and covered seating in one location.

The covered seating is especially appreciated during hot Florida summers.

Walk Palafox Street

You don't necessarily need an itinerary for Palafox Street.

Restaurants, bars, shops and local businesses line the street, making this one of the easiest areas of Downtown Pensacola to simply explore on foot.

Explore Historic Pensacola

Plaza Ferdinand VII sits in the heart of historic Downtown Pensacola.

The plaza played an important role in Florida history: Florida was formally transferred from Spain to the United States here in 1821.

Nearby, Historic Pensacola includes historic buildings and several museums, including the Pensacola Museum of History, Pensacola Museum of Art and Pensacola Children's Museum.

Playbook Tip: Check museum operating days before planning your visit. We learned this one firsthand when we arrived on a Monday and found several museums closed.

Seville Square and Seville Quarter

Continue through the historic district toward Seville Square.

The square hosts festivals and community events throughout the year, so it's worth checking the local calendar before your visit.

Nearby Seville Quarter has been part of Pensacola's entertainment and nightlife scene for decades, with multiple rooms offering different atmospheres and entertainment.

Coffee and a Small Stop for Kids

Need a coffee break?

Bodacious Brew Thru makes an easy stop while you're downtown.

Nearby, the Butterfly Learning Center provides a small educational stop geared primarily toward children. It isn't something we'd necessarily build an entire afternoon around, but it's an easy addition when you're already exploring the area.

Check What's Happening at the Pensacola Bay Center

Before choosing your Downtown Pensacola dates, check the Pensacola Bay Center schedule.

Our family has attended Disney on Ice and Pensacola Ice Flyers games here, and the venue hosts concerts, sporting events and family shows throughout the year.

An event here could easily become part of your downtown evening.

Visit Veterans Memorial Park

Veterans Memorial Park is worth slowing down for.

Its story dates to 1987, when the traveling Moving Wall visited Pensacola. Local Vietnam veterans were inspired to establish a permanent memorial, spending the following years raising money through community events and fundraisers.

Wall South was unveiled in 1992 as a permanent replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Today, Veterans Memorial Park contains memorials honoring multiple generations of American service members.

The park is free to visit and sits along Pensacola Bay.

End With a Pensacola Icon

You can't talk about Pensacola institutions without mentioning McGuire's Irish Pub.

The restaurant is famous for the enormous number of dollar bills covering its interior, but there's much more to see.

Different areas feature their own themes and memorabilia, including a Blue Angels room that feels especially appropriate in Pensacola.

McGuire's isn't just somewhere to eat. The atmosphere is part of the experience.

Build Your Own Downtown Pensacola Day

Don't try to squeeze every stop into one day.

If you're interested in history, spend more time around Historic Pensacola and the museums.

Families can add the Children's Museum, Butterfly Learning Center, a Blue Wahoos game or an event at the Pensacola Bay Center.

Food-focused visitors can explore Joe Patti's, The Garden, McGuire's and the restaurants lining Palafox.

Or skip the itinerary entirely and spend the day walking Palafox, exploring the historic district and making your way toward Pensacola Bay.

There's no single right way to explore Downtown Pensacola.
