Two Orlando after-hours events, two very different experiences. Here's what our family thought after trying both.
If you're planning a fall trip to Orlando, you might be wondering whether Disney's Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party or Universal Nights at Epic Universe is worth the splurge.
We've experienced Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party multiple times, including visits in October 2019, 2024, and 2026. In October 2026, we also attended Universal Nights at Universal Epic Universe.
And while both events offered something special, they were surprisingly different experiences.
As a family that loves making memories without wasting money, we wanted to compare the two from a real family perspective.
Here's how they stacked up.
1. The Atmosphere: Halloween Magic vs. Exclusive Theme Park Access
Disney wins for Halloween atmosphere.
Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is all about celebrating Halloween with Disney magic.
From trick-or-treating and costumes to themed entertainment and special character experiences, Disney creates an atmosphere that feels like a complete Halloween celebration.
It's especially magical for younger children who love dressing up, seeing their favorite characters, and collecting candy.
Universal Nights, on the other hand, offered something completely different.
Rather than being a traditional Halloween party, our experience focused on enjoying Epic Universe with significantly smaller crowds.
It felt more like having exclusive access to a theme park than attending a themed celebration.
And honestly? That was a huge part of the appeal.
2. Crowds and Wait Times: Universal Had the Advantage
One of the biggest differences between our experiences was the crowd level.
At Disney, even with a separately ticketed party, you're still sharing Magic Kingdom with a substantial number of other guests.
Popular attractions, character experiences, and entertainment can still draw significant crowds.
At Universal Nights, the atmosphere felt noticeably more relaxed.
We could explore Epic Universe without the same pressure to constantly rush from one attraction to the next.
We even had more opportunities to interact with Universal's team members because things weren't quite as hectic.
For families who want to experience as many attractions as possible without spending the entire night waiting in lines, this can make a huge difference.
Our winner: Universal Nights.
3. Food, Snacks, and Overall Value
When comparing special-ticketed events, it's important to look beyond the admission price.
At Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, trick-or-treating is part of the experience, but specialty snacks and most other food purchases cost extra.
At Universal Nights, we had access to included food and beverage perks.
In fact, we completely forgot about some of those perks until later in the evening!
We enjoyed the turtle shell calzones in Super Nintendo World, and one of our favorite last-minute discoveries was a delicious bao we grabbed on our way out.
Those little extras added to the experience and made the evening feel more special.
Of course, the better value depends on your family's priorities, ticket prices, and how much you'll actually use the included offerings.
4. Traveling With Kids: The End-of-Night Reality
Here's something that doesn't always make it into theme park comparisons: getting everyone back to the car after a long night.
At Disney's Magic Kingdom, leaving can feel like an adventure of its own.
After the party, we still had to navigate the transportation system to get back to the parking area.
With tired kids and a stroller, that meant dealing with the ferry, transportation connections, and getting sleeping children in and out of the stroller.
It's not exactly the magical ending you envision when planning your evening.
At Universal, our departure was much simpler.
We walked out, headed to our vehicle, and went on our way.
That might sound like a small detail, but when you're traveling with children late at night, convenience matters.
Our winner: Universal Nights.
5. Which Event Is Better for Younger Kids?
This is where Disney really shines.
Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party offers experiences that appeal to a wide range of ages, particularly younger children.
The costumes, trick-or-treating, Halloween entertainment, and Disney characters make the evening feel like a special occasion.
Universal's Epic Universe offers incredible themed lands and attractions, but families with younger children should consider height requirements and individual ride preferences.
Universal Nights may be a better fit for families with older kids, thrill-seekers, or adults who want to maximize their time exploring Epic Universe.
That doesn't mean younger children can't enjoy Universal. It simply means the value proposition is different.
6. Which One Would We Choose Again?
Here's our takeaway after experiencing both.
Choose Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party if:
Your family loves Disney characters and Halloween traditions.
You have younger children who enjoy trick-or-treating.
Themed entertainment and Halloween atmosphere are your priorities.
You're looking for a festive family celebration.
Choose Universal Nights if:
You want to experience Epic Universe with fewer crowds.
Your family prioritizes attractions over Halloween entertainment.
You appreciate a more relaxed theme park experience.
Included event perks and easier logistics matter to you.
Our Final Verdict
We had fun at both events, but for very different reasons.
Disney delivers the Halloween magic that families have come to love.
Universal Nights delivered something we weren't necessarily expecting: an experience that genuinely felt exclusive.
And sometimes, having the opportunity to slow down, enjoy the attractions, and experience the park without the usual crowds is worth more than another themed celebration.
Would we attend either event again? Absolutely. But we'd choose based on what kind of experience we wanted that year.
